Ask HN: Uptick in spam based on GitHub activity

Has anyone else seen a recent uptick in unsolicited email based on GitHub starring activity? There was a post recently here about Browserless doing this and I recently was added to some marketing list with no unsubscribe link from a local crypto startup which mentioned a repo I'd starred that wasn't even there's. Is this some new growth hacking thing people have been told to do? What can we do to prevent this?

Ask HN: Third Party Elements from Improving.duckduckgo.com
9 by rupertfupert | 5 comments on Hacker News.
I am not a very technical person but I try to browse the web consciously. In practice that means that I use uMatrix to observe and block third party content and trackers (coupled with uBlock). On almost every popular website that means that I mostly see google tracking (tagmanager, doubleclick, fonts, captacha). But recently I saw that third party elements of improving.duckduckgo.com are appearing every time I visit a link that I clicked in a duckduckgo search. uMatrix doesn't categorise it as script or XHR, but simply as 'other'. And the element seems only to be requested when coming directly from the search result, not like the google stuff that is usually always there. Does someone know what is going on here? Do I need to worry that ddg is becoming the next google?

Hi, I've been developing an HTML5 MMORPG game where people can submit code to play a game, like collect items, destroy defense towers or kill monsters, etc.. I've been working on this for over 1.5 yrs (all my spare time) and now it's ready for preview, does anyone want to try it out? It's mostly opensource (and the rest will be opensource sooner or later) Please access it with PC, it's an HTML5 game: https://bytelegend.com/ I really want it to expand to more languages, but right now I've only finished Java part. I wonder if anyone can help me with other languages. Besides, I'm not a good game story designer, but I really really want it to be a game with a fantastic story. Any help will be appreciated.

Launch HN: 8vdX (YC W22) – Venture debt to complement a seed round
21 by rchachra | 2 comments on Hacker News.
Hey HN! We are Ravi and Vijay from 8vdX! ( https://www.8vdx.com/ ) We are building a founder-friendly venture debt marketplace for early stage startups. We also provide seed-extension debt to breakout companies to extend their runway to get to a better Series A raise. Our mission is to be the preferred debt partner for high growth startups and scale with them as they grow from seed stage to Series A and beyond. Vijay and I were both working at Eight Capital, a high yield fund that I cofounded, when we gave a bridge loan to Kodo (a startup from YC W21) to support their high growth rate while they were getting their YC funding. Kodo is an Indian company and had to complete some standard processes for that to happen, but they needed money right away. Our loan allowed them to accelerate their growth and they ended up having an amazing Demo Day result. We wondered, could this be repeated with other startups or was it a one and done investment? We looked at publicly available data and quickly came to the conclusion that we could indeed underwrite venture debt to seed to early stage startups. That was the genesis of the 8vdX venture debt marketplace. We launched 3 months ago and have already provided venture debt to 16 startups. In good YC fashion, we’ve been focused on our batchmates to begin with :) But we believe this model can scale beyond the YC ecosystem and we’re very interested in that. Why do we think this makes sense right now? Seed rounds today are the same size as Series A used to be a decade ago. But there are no existing players who provide venture debt to early stage startups. Last year, seed and early stage and Series A startups raised ~$100B from equity investors. Venture debt can be up to 25% of the balance sheet of these rapidly growing companies, making this a $25B annual opportunity in this underserved market. Our loans are founder friendly. We do not force founders to open captive bank accounts, cash flow sweeps, take personal guarantees of the founders, or force the startup into bankruptcy if the startup is unable to repay. We have a simple and transparent application process to receive funds through the 8vdX digital platform. Currently, startups can apply digitally for up to $150k of debt by visiting our startup portal at 8vdx.com, and upon approval, the funds are wired to their account on the same day. 8vdX has a capital-light business model as the venture debt to the startups are entirely funded by angels and institutional investors through the marketplace. We have a deep product pipeline which includes multi-currency venture debt that can be extended on day zero to international companies. We will be supporting local currency venture debt for startups in India, Australia, United Kingdom, Mexico and Indonesia for the YC S22 batch and our goal is to support even more countries in the future. We are also inviting platform partnerships from online investment apps to distribute the 8vdX venture debt offering to their clients. Vijay and I look forward to hearing your ideas, questions and feedback. Thank you!

Ask HN: Which companies are hiring in-person teams?

Comparing my pre-pandemic (in-person) and current remote working situations, I believe that I would be more productive and creative if I meet regularly in person with my coworkers. Doesn't have to be 5 days a week - in fact, a mix of remote and in-person enable important, focused work. Though remote seems to work well for a lot of people, I can't help but miss in-person interactions and the spark that they bring. I'm looking at positions at startups and wish there was a filter for (current or eventual) in-person collaboration. I suspect that this may be the case for others who are on the hunt, so I hope that this thread can be generally helpful. Which companies are hiring specifically for in-person roles? How many days a week are in person? (SF Bay Area roles would be particularly appreciated!)

Ask HN: Ads with small budget for personal project?
41 by kioleanu | 30 comments on Hacker News.
I've been trying for months to bring more traffic to my personal project's website. I've tried multiple combinations for months, researched and paid people to look at the ads and suggest what I can do. Here's the problem: I only have a small budget I can afford and that is 15€ per day, per platform. 1. With Facebook, they say they sent more than double the clicks Analytics tells me they sent and the clicks that do pass through have an almost 100% bounce rate with average time spent on page of 0 seconds. For example, they say they sent 300 clicks in a week, but I only see 120-130 in Analytics. 2. With the same ad, on Reddit Ads, I see in Analytics 90-95% of the clicks they said they sent and the bounce rate is about 82%, with more than 3 minutes average sessions. With both platforms I run an ad and then a retargeting ad. Until now, this was the only strategy that had relative success. All the people that consulted on the ads said that with 15€ per day, Facebook gives 0 results, which I already saw and I find disappointing. The only explanation I can find is that on Facebook I only get bot clicks. Are there any other platforms that are more suitable for my budget?
