New top story on Hacker News: Ask HN: Which Wireless Carriers Protect Against SIM Swapping & Port-Out Attacks?

Ask HN: Which Wireless Carriers Protect Against SIM Swapping & Port-Out Attacks?

I've been a Google Fi customer for a long time, and one of the pros is that you need to log in to your Google Account to make service changes (plus getting a hold of support is difficult, which is good in this context). However, I'm trying to move away from Google services and want to use Fastmail on iOS instead of Gmail on Android, but Google Fi requires the use of a Google account (e.g. for the Fi app, which provides critical functionality IIUC). So to make a long-story short, I'm looking for another wireless carrier, but I'm concerned about SIM-swapping attacks (I know, I shouldn't be using SMS-based 2FA, but many services fallback to it and don't allow this to be disabled). So, which carriers offer some kind of protection against SIM swapping, ideally something more than a 4-digit PIN that's texted to you (looking at you Mint)? During my research, I found https://www.efani.com/, but this seems like overkill for a non-high profile person. I'm based in the US. Thanks in advance.

New top story on Hacker News: Show HN: Patterns – Habit Tracker App

Show HN: Patterns – Habit Tracker App
13 by degisner | 2 comments on Hacker News.
Hi everyone I'm a Notion-addicted person and love to build my own template to cover different aspects of my life, either work or personal stuff. Once, I wanted to build a habit tracker template, and I realized Notion was not the best solution. You can organize it in a much more efficient way just with a pen and a piece of paper. However, the best tool should live on your devices and have a correct structure. Then, I decided to try to build an app using SwiftUI and SwiftData. The goal was to make it a very basic version in one month. But it took me two months. I tried to add only the core features for MVP and see if it works for others. On Twitter, it already received some love, and I'm very excited to share the app here to get even more feedback. Let me know what you think

New top story on Hacker News: Ask HN: When LLMs make stuff up, call it 'confabulating', not 'hallucinating'

Ask HN: When LLMs make stuff up, call it 'confabulating', not 'hallucinating'
10 by irdc | 8 comments on Hacker News.
In humans, a hallucination is formally defined as being a sensory experience without an external stimulus. LLMs have no sensors to experience the world with (other than their text input) and (probably) don’t even have a subjective experience in the same way humans do. A more suitable term would be confabulation, which is what humans do when due to a memory error (eg. due to Korsakoff syndrome) we produce distorted memories of oneself. This may sometimes sound very believable to outsiders; the comparison with LLMs making stuff up is rather apt! So please call it confabulating instead of hallucinating when LLMs make stuff up.

We're currently writing an article about this. If you'd be up for sharing some lessons / takeaways / challenges here, or even better, having a chat (I'll reach out) that would be amazing. We'll of course fully attribute learnings / quotes etc.

New top story on Hacker News: Ask HN: What's the Situation with YouTube-Dl?

Ask HN: What's the Situation with YouTube-Dl?

I wanted to download some lectures [1] off youtube as I'm going to be without internet or a long period, and but A) just apt install get me a version which is too old, and I get ERROR: Unable to extract uploader id; please report this issue on https://yt-dl.org/bug . Make sure you are using the latest version; see https://ift.tt/ie2OcZP on how to update. and B) going to the update url I see Access denied; Due to a ruling of the Hamburg Regional Court, access to this website is blocked. So, what's the situation with youtube-dl? How do I get it working? As a separate question, how else can I download something off youtube? I guess last resort I'll have to dig into the python to figure out why that regex is failing and what else I can do about it, but that's not sustainable. [1] if anyone is curious, just discovered this from HN: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNOu-SEacNU&list=PLDcUM9US4XdPz-KxHM4XHt7uUVGWWVSus&index=5
